What does jikan mean? The literal translation is time in English, but what does jikan or time mean… to YOU? In Japan there is a tradition when you turn 20 years old where you wear a kimono and go through a coming-of-age ceremony. You are essentially stepping into your adulthood. However, these days most teenagers and young adults are spending their youth on their phones and digital items are becoming more essential, or pervasive, to our day-to-day lives. Thus, I decided to do my data visualization project on how many times a day I checked the time on my phone. This was meant to capture the essence in which we, as humans, are fixated on keeping time and passing time, instead of simply existing.
